"God Our Director"
"When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them." (Exodus 34:29-30 ESV)
I get so intrigued by the behind-the-scenes features of a movie that I like. It really lets me know some of the intricate details of the movie’s creation. As a leader, I am always intrigued by how much a good director can make a movie great by asking questions, taking notes, and offering suggestions. I’m confident that most of us can attest that amazing things can happen to us if we remain open to the wisdom and direction of insightful people. But more than that, we must also take time to allow God to do this in our lives.
In Exodus 34, Moses took some time to practice silence and solitude as he went up to a mountain to spend time with God. When he did, he received guidelines for God’s people on how they were to live, keeping their relationship with God at the center. When Moses came down from the mountain his face was glowing; he was radiating from his time in God’s presence. In the New Testament, we also see Jesus regularly make time to spend with God in the “erēmos” which translates to “wilderness or quiet place”. May we follow Paul’s advice in his letter to the Romans, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer,” as we radiate the joy, peace, and love of Jesus Christ heading into the new year (Rom. 12:12).
