Advent Devotionals: Day 4

The book of Isaiah was written approximately 750 years before the birth of Jesus Christ.  Isaiah prophesied that God the Father would give His Son and one of His names would be Wonderful Counselor.  The word “name” in Scripture often signifies an individual’s person and character.  It was not always what He would be called but who he would be.  Wonderful Counselor is actually two names that would characterize the Messiah.  “Wonderful” is not an adjective but a noun.  The Messiah would be full of wonder.  Jesus’ life from His birth to His death and resurrection was characterized by wonder.  He healed the sick, caused the blind to see and raised the dead.  These were wonders only God could perform.  They pointed to who Jesus was.  He is unique among humanity as the God/Man.  Jesus is wonderful because that is Who He is.

The Messiah also will be called Counselor.  Jesus revealed the very mind of God and gave counsel from God’s perspective.  He would not need anyone to give Him counsel because He is God.  Psalm 139 reveals that God knows our hearts, our thoughts and everything about us.  He can give perfect counsel because of His full understanding of how He has made each of us.  

Prayer: Father, thank you for giving Your Son.  Truly Jesus, You are wonderful and beyond our complete comprehension.  You guide us in the counsel of Your will, which is the very best for us.  Help us this Advent Season to learn more of the wonder of Who You are.  Amen
