“Dad, I Deserved the B.”
We homeschooled two of our children through high school. I took the time to teach one of my daughters Greek, the language of the New Testament. She did very well her first semester, easily earning an A grade.
However, she began to slack off in the second semester and was surprised to earn a B grade, the first B in her life. Frankly, I felt she was getting a little" puffed up" as she boasted to her church friends that she was learning to read the Gospel of John in Greek.
After graduating from homeschool, she decided to attend a local high school for a second senior year so she could “breeze through” and enjoy the senior year festivities.
At the next year’s graduation she shared with me, “Dad, I would have been a valedictorian at my graduation except for the B grade I got from you and the B grade I got in math from Auntie Marsha.” I was both shocked and pleased to hear what then came out of her mouth, “Dad, I deserved a B in both. I didn’t deserve to be a valedictorian.”
In our eyes, she had gained the highest award that can ever be given—humility.
A few reminders for all of us:
Proverbs 22:4 “The reward of humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, honor and life.”
Romans 2:3 “For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think…”
1 Peter 5:5 “…clothe yourselves with humility…[God] gives grace to the humble.”
