Daily Devotional

Today my son Micaiah turns 3 years old. He is our youngest child; we also have a daughter named Mikayla who is 5 and a daughter named Melina who is 7. My children all continue to grow (despite my clear directions telling them not to do so), and as they grow, they also change. 3 years ago, my son was a newborn infant and now he’s running, jumping, and chasing his older sisters around the house. One sure and inevitable thing in life is that things change.

I think the constant change that surrounds us can cause us to sometimes forget that we serve a God who does not change. Who He was is who He is and who He will be. Take a minute to think about that, because it really is an amazing thought.

The same God who spoke the universe into existence still speaks to us today. The same God who breathed life into Adam breathes life into us today. The same God who opened the waters of the Red Sea opens pathways for us today.

We look at the miraculous works that God did throughout the pages of the Bible and say, “of course none of that was too hard for God,” but then by the same measure, nothing must be too hard for Him now. The God who was able then is the same God who is able today.

He. Does. Not. Change.

This isn’t to say that His unchanging character means He always has the same response to every situation. To my knowledge, the Red Sea was only parted once. What it does tell us is that we can trust God to be who He says He is: faithful, true, compassionate, loving, mighty, powerful, near, aware of all that we go through, and present with us.

I look at my son and see tremendous change from one day to the next. I truly don’t know what the future holds. Will he still laugh at my jokes 5 years from now? Will he still want to hang out with me 10 years from now? Will he still call me “his best buddy” 20 years from now? I certainly hope all those things happen.

When it comes to God, I don’t have to hope, I can know. Because he has never broken a promise, He is fully worthy of trust (also known as trustworthy). Because I believe in His Son Jesus Christ, I know my standing. I am forgiven, I am loved, and I have been given the right to be called a child of God (John 1:12). No matter what we face, God does not change. No matter what we face, we will not be consumed. What a tremendous promise to think about.
