Daily Devotional

The words of Jesus have practical significance to all who desire to be followers of the Lord. Jesus taught His disciples to go beyond just the mental understanding of the truths of God’s Word. They needed to go a step further by putting the truth into practice. One of the things I have learned through many years of ministry is that when I study and teach God’s Word, within the next few days God will give me the opportunity to practice what He has taught me. I don’t always successfully live out the Scriptures in my daily life. God then gives me other opportunities to live out His truth. When I live out what He has taught me, I grow in my relationship with Him. God’s truth then sets me free from those things that have been holding me back in my relationship with Him. The truth can only set us free when we make personal application of it to our lives. Jesus refers to this as abiding in His word. He was speaking of believing His teaching and putting it into practice in our life. In other words we are living our lives so that there is no conflict between how we live and what we believe to be the teaching of God’s Word.

Jesus taught His followers that we actually only know the truth when we practice it. This experiential knowledge comes as we make application of the Scriptures to the issues we face in life. This results in us living the truth. The truth can then set us free from the habits, sins or lies that may be hindering our relationship with the Lord.  

We need to ask ourselves, is there any biblical truth that we are not living out in our lives today? Is our walk with the Lord hindered by habits, sins or other issues that are rooted in neglecting to live according to the teaching of Scripture? Jesus gave us the truth to set us free, let us walk in that truth today.
