Daily Devotional: Security

John 3:16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

English is the only language I can speak. I’ve taken classes in Spanish and Greek, but I didn’t leave those classes fluent (or even conversational). Since I’ve always been surrounded by others who also spoke English, I never gave much thought to my language, that is until I went to a foreign country. Suddenly I was surrounded by people who all spoke a common language that was wholly uncommon to me. I realized that I had taken for granted something as simple as language.

Security is another thing that is easy to take for granted. How often do we think about the locks on our doors, the pin number for our ATM, or the password for our email? These things provide a level of security, and yet, if you’re like me, you give them little thought.

When it comes to our faith, I think one of the greatest sources of eternal security can be found in John 3:16. It’s probably the most well-known verse in the Bible. Many know it by heart and could recite it without really thinking about it. It’s such a popular verse that we may not give it much thought, but just because it is familiar does not make it any less beautiful and powerful.

John 3:16 is a popular verse for good reason; it encapsulates the essence of the Gospel in one sentence. It takes the profound idea of grace and simplifies it so even a child could understand it. We were all on the road to perishing and yet God loved us enough to send His Son so that we could instead have eternal life. That’s amazing! That’s life changing! That’s good news!

Next time you turn the lock on your door, enter your ATM pin, or type the password for your email, think about the earthly security those things offer and take a moment to think about the eternal security you have in Jesus Christ. That is something we should never take for granted because it effects not only our eternity, but every day of our life. You are loved by God and when you place your faith in Jesus Christ your eternal home is secure!
