Daily Devotional: Security

We live in a world filled with the alarming need for security locks, security doors, security cameras, security lights and security dogs (Does our Dachshund/Chihuahua qualify?). I even put fake security camera surveillance stickers on my trailer. (I am assuming trailer thieves won’t read this devotional and none of you care about stealing my cheap Harbor Freight and Walmart camping gear.)

But, what is it that truly keeps us safe and secure? Certainly nothing earthly. In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reminded us to lay up treasures in heaven where “bugs and burglars can’t get to them.” (That’s my personal paraphrase of Matthew 6:19). In other words, He is calling us to keep a loose grip on earthly things that will not last and a tight grip on the heavenly things that matter for eternity.

I am reminded of the old hymn of the faith:
What a fellowship, what a joy divine, leaning on the everlasting arms. 
What a blessedness. What a peace is mine. Leaning on the everlasting arms.

The refrain continues:
Leaning, leaning. Safe and secure from all alarms.
Leaning, leaning. Leaning on the everlasting arms.

If you know it, sing it right now. The rest of you, read the words again. In the midst of an unsafe world let’s all join in leaning on El Shaddai, our all-powerful God, as the true source of our joy-filled and peace-filled security. And, of course, let’s not forget to lock our doors and reward the dog for barking when someone comes near. Almighty God can even use them to keep us safe and secure.
