On this very day 13 years ago, my wife Megan and I were married. Though we became husband and wife that day, we continue to live out that reality every day of our lives. My brother and best-man said something in his toast that I’ve never forgotten; “Today is not the culmination, it’s the beginning.” My pursuit of my wife didn’t end the day we said “I do” but has continued each day since.
When I think of my relationship with Jesus, I can’t help but see the parallels. I became a follower of Jesus as a child, but it was more than just a moment, it was the beginning of a lifelong pursuit. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that our faith journey is not a sprint, but a marathon. When we commit to follow Jesus, we commit to follow Him all the way; for better or worse; in sickness and health; for richer and for poorer. When you started this race, you didn’t know what it would look like. There’s been hills and valleys, twists and turns, joyous surprises and devastating defeats. Wherever we are on our faith journey, however many “laps” we’ve done or have yet to do, let us take our eyes off the changing landscape and fix our eyes on our prize, Jesus Christ. Let us continue to run this race as it was meant to be run, with endurance.
