Luke 10:38b-40a

“A certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she also had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving…”

I identify with Martha so much because I’m such a “doer.” During this time there’s so much to be doing and we are rightly concerned with wanting to care for people. But in “doing” I don’t want to get distracted away from meeting with Jesus; the person I desire to be “doing” everything for. “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you...” (Isaiah 26:3). Did you notice that Martha welcomed Jesus into her house? She obviously had the gift of hospitality, but in “doing” she got distracted from the person she was serving and her mind became engulfed in the work.

When I prepare to spend time with the Lord I have learned that I have to put my phone in the other room, make sure my computer is off and start off by praying that He will keep my mind fixed and open to what He wants to say to me. If my mind is not fixed, being renewed, being conformed (Ro. 12:2) to my Savior, then all my “doing” is as sounding brass and clanging symbols (2 Cor. 13:1). It really won’t profit anyone, least of all me. I need my time with Jesus, listening to His Word and communing with Him. Let’s pray for one another to daily come to the Lord and eat the true manna from heaven!
