Psalm 29:4

"The voice of the Lord is powerful, the voice of the Lord is majestic."

Hearing His Voice in the Midst of Noise

In recent days I have been encouraging people, young and old, to use these days of being “sheltered in place” to get a lot done. However, there is a downside. For many of us, our “Things to Do” list is expanding and SHOUTING at us with every call, text, email and on-line meeting. (Frankly, many of us are getting “zoomed out.”)

However, on our list of priorities needs to be a period of QUIET every day. That is certainly not easy when we are being pulled from so many noisy directions and face so many distractions, night and day. On the one hand, many of us have never been more available; on the other hand, we must make ourselves unavailable - if only for thirty minutes a day. Go on a media fast. Turn off all devices. Spend some time in God’s Word. Go for a walk, pray, sing, and meditate on the power and majesty of God. Refuse to let the “Things to Do” list and the other distractions drown out God’s voice.

Listen carefully to Him whispering to your heart in His creation around you, His Holy Spirit within you, His providential goodness surrounding you and His Holy Word before you. Listen intently to His voice alone. The result? Psalm 29:11 “The LORD will give strength to His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.” Now, from the wealth of that strength and peace your quiet time with God brings, go tackle that perpetually noisy list, looking with excitement to that next period of quiet where you will listen to His voice and “Be still and know that He is God” (Psalm 46:10).
