21 Days of Prayer for the Lost: Day 11

Open Doors

Colossians 4:2-4 – “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison - that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak.” (ESV)

There sure are a lot of doors in scripture. Like the door on Noah’s Ark, for letting animals in and keeping flood waters out. A door on Abraham’s tent, through which Sarah heard about her future son.  And tied at a door was the colt for Jesus to ride on His triumphant entry.

There are also figurative doors, such as Genesis 4:7,  where God warns Cain “sin is crouching at the door.” In Psalm 141:3, King David asks God “keep watch over the door of my lips!” Jesus referred to Himself as a door in John 10:9 – “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”  Likewise with Colossians 4:3, where Paul requests “that God may open to us a door for the word”.

So what does this door for the word look like?

Door could simply be a metaphor for opportunity. Yet, I suspect Paul is asking for something more than an opportunity.  Opportunity has an element of chance where Paul’s open door for the word is something more intentional, something designed by God. Such as Revelation 3:8, “Behold, I have put before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.”

When God places before us an open door for the word, we can trust that He has readied our heart and mind to go through these open doors, by faith, and will give us words to declare and make clear the mystery of Christ. That declaration may simply be telling your story, sharing what Christ has done for you. Then making clear the mystery of Christ is that God is willing and able to do for others all He has done for you.

Re-read Paul’s words to the Colossians with a view of how his instructions apply to you today. Then pray, and keep on praying, for those who will be on the other side of those open doors.

Things to pray for today:
  • Pray steadfastly, to be watchful for open doors.
  • Pray the He will give us just the right the words for each one we share with.
