21 Days of Prayer for the Lost: Day 8

What is the Gospel?
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 – “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…” (ESV)
Each of us has the exciting privilege of sharing the Gospel with the lost. The word “Gospel” means good news. As Christ followers, we are to share the “good news” about Jesus Christ. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” (Romans 1:16) It is essential that we share this message clearly, for the Gospel is the power of God that brings salvation.
The Scriptures reveal that believing the Gospel brings us salvation – “…the Gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved…” (1Cor 15:1-2). Continuing to believe these truths shows that we have true faith in Christ. Understanding the truth of the Gospel is an essential component for true salvation.
The Gospel is clearly defined in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. The Gospel declares that Christ died for our sins. The passage qualifies this by stating that Christ’s death was “in accordance with the Scriptures.” Jesus, being the Son of God, took our sins upon Himself and died in our place to pay the price for our sin. We are hopelessly lost in our sin without Christ’s sacrificial death. The only way our sins can be forgiven is through His sacrifice.
The proof that Christ died for our sins is that He was buried. Christ was declared to be dead by the soldiers, His body was taken from the cross, was prepared for burial and placed in a tomb. The tomb was sealed and guards stood watch over it. All of this proved that Christ truly gave up His life for our sin.
The Gospel also declares that Christ rose again the third day, victorious over sin and death. This truth is again qualified by the statement, “in accordance with the Scriptures.” The Scriptures tell us that it was a physical resurrection and that it was proven through Christ being seen on numerous occasions by His disciples and hundreds of others. It was not some mystical or ghost-like resurrection. The fact that it was a physical resurrection was witnessed by the guards standing at the tomb, the disciples who saw Him, touched Him, and talked with Him. All this proves that He was truly risen from the dead and alive.
As we share the Gospel with those who do not know Christ as their Savior, it is essential that we share the truth that Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. Without believing these truths, it is impossible for one to be saved.
The Gospel is life-giving and our desire should be to share its truths every time God opens the opportunity.
