"The Truth Reveals the Lie"

John 8:31–32 - So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (ESV)

Have you ever played Two Truths and a Lie? It's a fun get-to-know-you, icebreaker game that I often play in situations when I'm around new people, where the objective is to spot the lie. Let's try it. Here are my three: a) I have been in a hot air balloon. b) I have jumped out of an airplane. c) I have been ziplining. Could you spot the lie? Truth be told, I've never been in a hot air balloon, so if you guessed a), you are correct. This icebreaker points out a simple truth: that is, we can not know whether or not something is untrue unless we know what truth is.

So, how do we know the difference between the truth and a lie from the enemy? Because honestly, a lie from Pastor Wil about riding a hot balloon means nothing, but how devastating are lies from the enemy that cause fear, doubt, guilt, shame, and pain when we know God wants to set us free with the truth? If we are going to survive the attacks of the enemy, we need the truth. In fact, the Bible tells us that putting on the whole armor of God, including the belt of truth, is what helps us withstand attacks from the enemy.

In today's passage, we see truth as the source of freedom in our lives. When we consider the belt of truth, a belt is what holds everything together. And the truth of Jesus Christ is what holds everything together in our lives. The devil is a liar. He is a deceiver. And his attacks are designed to pervert the truth. But we must know the truth so we may be able to discern the lie when it's thrown our way. It's only through intimate knowledge of the truth about God and His word that we can dispel the attacks from the enemy. May we be found as workers committed to handling the word of truth. Once we know the truth, we will be able to expose the lies.
