"Where is God Working?"

How can I know where God is working? And once I know that, how can I join Him in His work? I think it starts with prayer. God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and everything that is living on this earth. He created man and woman in His image. He knit me together in my mother’s womb. God is so powerful. He sent His Son, Jesus, to reconcile us to Himself, adopting us into His family through His sacrifice for our sins at the cross. And God’s work never quits. Jesus holds all things together.

Colossians 1:17 - "He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together."

One of the things I’ve been praying about is outreach. Where is God working? What’s He doing? Being the College Pastor, I’ve been praying about opportunities to get on campus at Fresno State. Well, our church has been hosting Fresno State Band events; initiation ceremonies, recitals, and American Music Concerts. Because I’ve been the host pastor for those events, the Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity (a music fraternity at Fresno State) invited me to become an honorary member. I was officially initiated into the group in October, 2025. Jenn said, “I can’t believe I’m married to a Frat Boy!”

Because I am now a member of this fraternity, I can go to their weekly meetings, their monthly events, and even perform with them. I sang with them at the Fresno Veterans Home of California on Saturday, March 8th. I went to rehearsal with them. Rode in a car with them. Performed with them. Ate lunch with them. And then came back to Fresno State for a debrief with them. Did you catch all the ‘with them’s’ in those sentences? God opened this door for me. I simply stepped through it. When I walk into the meetings they all break-out clapping and cheering “Pastor Brian’s here!” I almost want to cry. What is God doing? I don’t know, exactly. But one thing I do know is He is at work. And I want to be part of it.

In order to see God's work, we need to pray Christ-centered prayers focused on our Lord. In prayer, the Holy Spirit will show us what He’s doing, and how we can join Him in His work.

Our Father wants us completely yielded to His will. When we set the agenda for the Lord, deciding what WE want to do, rather than prayerfully finding the places where He is already at work, we miss opportunities to make a difference. When we are quiet before the Lord, listening to His voice speak through His Word, He will guide us. And if we are obedient, being willing to step into situations where He is at work, He will do amazing things. In my experience, when I’m in a situation where I wonder what I’m doing there, and what He’s up to, that’s when He’s most at work through me.

Ask God to open your eyes to how He is working around you, and when He does, step into that situation and ask Him to use you to make a difference for Him. And He will.
