Advent Devotional: Day 23

The narrative of the birth of John the Baptist greatly affects the Christmas story. Without this narrative, the effect of a small baby who was Immanuel, God with us, would have very little effect. The final verse of this narrative is where the emphasis must be placed: “For what will this child be used?” The people knew the hand of God was on this baby. But what led them to that conclusion? Consider three things: the baby displayed God’s mercy upon the barren Elizabeth (1:57), his birth led to Zechariah’s worship, who in turn led others to worship (1:64–65), and the boy was to be the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy (Isaiah 40:1–5; Malachi 4:5). John was the messenger “Preparing the way of the LORD.” His birth marks the end of 400 silent years. God was about to actively move amongst His People once again and this boy was to prepare them for this time. The people were witnessing the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Prayer: Faithful Lord God, thank You for the ways You abundantly show Your love to us. Your love never fails. Thank You for not leaving us in silence and sin, but always providing a way of escape. Thank You for Your Son.  We worship You. Amen.
