Hosea 10:12 - “Sow for yourselves righteousness; Reap in mercy; Break up your fallow ground, For it is time to seek the LORD, Till He comes and rains Righteousness on you.” (NKJV)
As I’m meditating on these words my thoughts are, “It takes work!” Sometimes when I think about how I share the salvation message of knowing Christ I tend to think, “Ask Jesus into your life and you will go to heaven and live eternity with Him.” And that is the simple truth. But if you live any longer from that moment there’s continuing decisions of whether you are going to keep giving your life to Him. Those decisions of whether you are going to choose Him, that’s the work of sowing righteousness and breaking up fallow ground.
What is fallow ground anyway? I looked it up. It means land that is left uncultivated for a period of time. Fallowing allows the soil to recover and store organic matter and is effective for destroying weeds.
As I look at this verse we are told to Sow, Reap and Break up uncultivated ground. That is what is needed to seek the Lord. It reminds me of the Parable of the Sower in the Gospels. So many types of ground you can sow in and get different results. But the best result comes when we sow in good soil. This verse says that is the ground that has been broken up. You loosen and turn the soil so that it is good for planting.
So then I asked myself, “What does that mean to me?” The result is mercy and righteousness, but this sounds like work. So what is the work?
I have to go back to the Word of God. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 says, “And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.”
I have come to the conclusion that as I keep coming to Jesus, the Word of God, He does the work in me. He tills the fallow ground in my life that has become stubborn to good nutrients. It allows His righteousness to fill up the areas the tilling opens up to Him.
I know it doesn’t happen by osmosis, my work is to keep coming to Him. But I know He does the real work… and He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek Him. Heb. 11:6
