The Roller Coaster Life

Esther 7:3-4 - Then Queen Esther answered, “If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be granted me for my wish, and my people for my request. For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men, and women, I would have been silent, for our affliction is not to be compared with the loss to the king.” (ESV)

In my youth, I was quite the thrill seeker. I enjoyed BMX riding, skateboarding, rollerblading, etc. Once, I even attempted to jump over a broomstick and land on a skateboard using a pogo stick in my grandmother's living room. The results were less than ideal. That said, I also love a solid roller coaster ride! I know many friends who thoroughly enjoy “The Happiest Place on Earth” but as soon as I was old enough, or tall enough rather, I was all about Six Flags Magic Mountain because of the roller coasters. I just think they're so fun because they take something everyone experiences—like fear—and let us experience it safely.

But what happens when fear creeps into our lives when it has not been tailored for our enjoyable experience? What happens when we experience fear apart from a roller coaster? How do I deal with fear when it's not fun, exciting, or safe? Like a roller coaster, we all have moments in life when we feel like we’re at the top of our game and have the strength and courage to do anything. But then there are times when something happens, that brings us to our lowest low. Life at times can be a lot like a roller coaster, full of twists and turns, ups and downs.

The story of Queen Esther tells this courageous story of how she confronted Haman, an evil official who was plotting to kill God's people. Esther was their only hope because she alone could approach the king and appeal for their safety. If she failed, God's people were doomed. But as the story unfolds, we get a glimpse of God at work behind the scenes, giving Esther the courage to expose Haman's plan and save lives. Her story reminds us even if we're afraid of the sudden changes that happen in our lives, God can help us take fear and turn it into courage.
