Used Bibles

Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (NASB)

John 8:31–32
“So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (NASB)

Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (NASB)

One evening I was leading a Bible Study for young women in my home. One of the women shared that the Bible she carried belonged to her mother who had passed away. Flipping through her mother’s Bible, she showed all her mother’s personal notes. She tearfully expressed how sad she felt that her mother only had one Bible. She was blessed to get her mother’s Bible when she passed, but her brother was sad there was not one for him. This really struck me!

My Bible is one of my most treasured possessions. I write notes and underline favorite verses. I even drawing pictures in the margins. I make a brief record of life events that particular verses helped me through. The decision was made.

I determined that every time I read through the whole Bible, I would buy a new one to love and cherish and pass on to one of my children and grandchildren. That was some ten years ago. I have ten Bibles so far—each with personal and study notes, drawings, and a multitude of underlined verses. Each one is special. My husband is doing the same thing. We have lots of kids and grandkids.

Our desire is that when we go to Heaven our family will have tangible evidence that we depended on the Word of God daily. We want them to hold in their hands a well-worn and well-loved Bible—God’s love letter to us and to them!

“Lord, we pray this will become a family tradition carried on throughout our generations.”

1 Peter 2:2 “…like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation…” (NASB)

For Parents and Grandparents:
  1. Review and post the above Scriptures. Pray for creative ways to communicate to your children your faith in God and love of His Word.

  2. Ask the Lord to reveal to you the best ways for you to grow in your love of the Bible and your great God who gave it to you.

  3. Consider preparing multiple, well-used Bibles to pass on to your family when you go to Heaven. Write personal notes for them to read in the future.
