Chickens
“Make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; For if you cry for discernment, Lift your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the Lord, and discover the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:2-5 (NASB)
Oh, how I enjoy my chickens! When I step out of the house and head for the chicken coop they jump up and down, dancing for joy! Of course, they know I am coming with treats! I open the top half of the door to the chicken run and lean inside to scatter the treats throughout the area. Their favorite treat is coconut. It’s like candy to them. Then I sit down on the bench and watch them scramble to eat up all the treats.
Chickens’ claw-like feet can dig and scrape up the dirt with no effort at all. When they are not eating, or taking a dust bath, they are digging! What are they digging for? Treasure! A bug, grub, or stray piece of coconut. Their favorite spot is around the water trough, because the moisture draws bugs underneath the container. Eventually, their enthusiastic digging creates such a big hole, I have to fill it in to keep the water trough from sinking into the hole and spilling the water.
My chickens digging inspires me to ask: Do I search for God and his wisdom with the same vigor? Am I willing to search, claw, dig into God’s Word and into prayer to know God better and gain the treasure of wisdom? Am I hungry for the treats God has for me? I think God wants me to spend some effort in searching. He wants me to want it enough to dig enthusiastically for his knowledge, understanding, and discernment. I need to be more like my chickens!

PARENTS:
- Explain Proverbs 2:2-5 to your kids. Help them memorize it. Talk about the ways you can search for God. (Bible, Prayer, Sunday School, family devotions.)
- Watch a video of chickens digging for the treasured bugs—or better yet, visit a farm!
- Talk with them about what the chickens are doing and relate it to Proverbs 2:2-5
- Draw chickens with your kids and talk about it! Post it on your fridge with the verse.
